WWI Causes
Objectives:
Long Term Causes
Short Term Cause
An immediate cause to the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife on June 28, 1914.The Archduke Ferdinand was shot and killed by Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip. Archduke was heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. The happy couple was out to visit the capital city of Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia, when a few young Bosnians had a separate plan. These young Bosnians believed that Bosnia rightfully belonged to Serbia. The young Bosnians also saw Ferdinand as a tyrant. The entire world was shocked by the senseless murder of the Archduke and his wife, but no one ever thought that it could lead to a world war.
Why did the US enter the war on the side of the Allies?
The USA had an original strategy to stay neutral during the huge war. But, in 1915, the Germans sunk the Lusitania, a US passenger ocean liner with 159 Americans on board. This gave the USA a perfect reason to join the war effort, but why for the allies? Later in 1917, the British intercepted and decoded a telegram sent from Arthur Zimmerman, a German secretary, to the German ambassador in Mexico proposing that Mexico ally with Germany against the US. In reward, he promised Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The USA joined the war because they were prodded by the Germans, and they joined the allies to be against the Germans. The significance of these causes was, obviously, that it caused a huge world war and a sense of nationalism for America.
